The World. In Quenya, Eä means 'It is' or 'Let it be'. This was the word Ilúvatar spoke when the World began.

Eagles

The Eagles that aided the Elves and Men in Middle-earth. They lived in the Misty Mountains and reported much of the movements of Sauron. The Orcs greatly feared the Eagles. Their leader was Thorondor.

Eärendil (1)

Means 'Lover of the Sea'. Son of Tuor and Idril, he escaped the sack of Gondolin. He married Elwing and fathered Elrond and Elros. He sailed to Valinor to ask for the help of the Valar in the wars against Morgoth. He took a Silmaril, the one Beren cut from the Iron Crown, upon his journey, and it is said that is why he was able to reach the Blessed Lands. He and his descendants were given the choice of which race they wished to belong to. Elwing chose to be counted among the Eldar, so Eärendil did the same. He was set to sail Vingilot through the heavens with the Silmaril upon his brow.

Eärendil (2)

The fifth King of Gondor, the son of Cemendur and father of Anardil. He died in 324.

Eärendur (1)

A lord of Andúnië in Númenórë.

Eärendur (2)

The tenth and last King of Arnor. He was the son of Elendur and father of Amlaith, who later ruled Arthedain, and 2 other sons, who ruled Cardolan and Rhudaur. Eärendur died in 861.

Eärnil I

The thirteenth King of Gondor, second of the Ship-Kings. He was the son of Tarciryan, and fathered Ciryandil. He repaired the ancient haven at Palargir, and raised a great navy. He took control of Umbar in 931, but was lost with many of his men and ships in a storm off Umbar in 936.

Eärnil II

The thirty-second King of Gondor, the son of Telumehtar, and father of Eärnur. He was the Captain of the Southern Army under King Ondoher who, with his two sons, was slain in battle with the Wainriders and Men of Khand and Near Harad in 1944. Eärnil destroyed the army from Harad, and routed the Wainriders. Upon hearing of Ondoher's death, Arvedui claimed the Kingship of Gondor, but was rejected. Eärnil was given the Kingship in 1945. He promised to send an army with his son to aid Arvedui in his battles against Angmar, but it came too late, in 1973. Eärendil died in 2043.

Eärnur

The thirty-third and last King of Gondor. He was the son of Eärnil II. He was sent by his father in 1973 to aid Arvedui in his fight against Angmar, but he came too late. He followed Círdan who led a great force to Angmar to challenge the Witch-king. This army routed the forces of Angmar, and the Witch-king fled, but was overtaken at Carn Dûm. The Witch-king challenged Eärnur to battle, but the prince's horse fled uncontrollably. Glorfindel then rode against the Witch-king and forced him to flee to Mordor. Eärnur, upon his return, wished to challenge the Witch-king, but Glorfindel dissuaded him, saying "..not by the hand of man will he fall." Eärnur was crowned in 2043, and immediately the Witch-king, now Lord of Minas Morgul, challened him to single combat, but the King was restrained by Mardil Voronwë. Minas Anor was renamed Minas Tirith, and was ever after watchful towards Minas Morgul. Seven years later, in 2050, the Witch-king repeated his challenge, and this time Mardil could not restrain Eärnur. He went with a small number of knights, but none were even seen again.

Eärrámë

Meaning 'Sea-wing', it was the name of Tuor's ship.

Eärwen

The daughter of Olwë, she married Finarfin. She was the mother of Finrod, Orodreth, Angrod, Aegnor and Galadriel.

East Beleriand

The area of Beleriand that was east of the river Sirion.

East Dales

The Eastemnet of Rohan.

Eastemnet

The eastern half of Rohan, east of the Entwash in its southern part, and east of Fangorn in its northern part.

Easterlings (1)

Also called the Swarthy Men. They entered Beleriand from the East after the Dagor Bragollach, and fought for both the Eldar and Morgoth in the Nirnaeth Arnoediad. Morgoth let them dwell in Hithlum where they oppressed those People of Hador who remained there.

Easterlings (2)

Men from the lands east of Mordor. They first invaded Gondor in 490 Third Age. They were defeated by Rómendacil I in 500. Many fought upon the Pelennor Fields during the War of the Ring. Others fought against Kings Brand and Dáin II Ironfoot in the Battle of Dale.

Eastfarthing

The eastern part of the Shire.

Eastfold

The Eastemnet.

Eastlands

A term for the lands east of Mordor.

East Road

Also called The Road, and The Great Road. It led from the Shire through Bree, over the Hoarwell to Rivendell, over Anduin, through Mirkwood to the Forest River in Mirkwood. It was the main road travelers used to cross over the Misty Mountains.

East Wall

The cliff on the easternmost part of Rohan where the Emyn Muil and the plains of Rohan met.

Echoing Mountains

See Ered Lómin.

Echoriath

The 'Encircling Mountains' around the plain of Gondolin.

Ecthelion

An Elf-lord of Gondolin who fought during the sack of the city. He slew, and was slain by, Gothmog.

Ecthelion I

Seventeenth Ruling Steward of Gondor. Son of Orodreth, and father of Egalmoth. He rebuilt the White Tower of Minas Tirith in 2698, which was later named after him. He died in 2698.

Ecthelion II

Twenty-fifty Ruling Steward of Gondor. Son of Turgon, and father of Denethor II. Began to strengthen Gondor against Mordor by encouraging all men to enter his service and rewarding the faithful. A great captain named Thorongil advised him in much of what he did. Ecthelion often welcomed Gandalf. He died in 2984.

Edain

The Men of the three races that were friends of the Elves: the houses of Bëor, Haladin, and Marach. Edain is the name in Sindarin, in Quenya it is Atani. The singular is Adan (Q. singular Atan).

Edoras

The capital city of Rohan.

Edrahil

The Chief of the Elves of Nargothrond. He accompanied Beren and Finrod on their quest. Edrahil died in the dungeons of Taur-in-Gaurhoth.

Egalmoth

Eighteenth Ruling Steward of Gondor. Son of Ecthelion I, and father of Beren. Egalmoth died in 2743.

Egladil

The place in Lõrien in the Angle where the Elves dwelt.

Eglador

The former name of Doriath. It was called this before the Girdle of Melian was set to protect the forest.

Eglarest

The southern of the Havens of the Falas.

Eglath

The 'Forsaken People'. This name was taken by those Teleri who stayed in Beleriand looking for Elwë while the rest of the Teleri went to Valinor.

Eilenach

The second beacon of Gondor, from the east.

Eilinel

The wife of Gorlim the Unhappy. She was slain when the hosts of Morgoth overran Barahir's hide-out in Dorthonion.

Eithel Ivrin

Means 'Ivrin's Well'. It was the source of the Narog.

Eithel Sirion

Means 'Sirion's Well'. It was in the eastern face of Ered Wethrin where Fingolfin and Fingon had their fortress.

Ekkaia

The Quenya name for the Outer Sea. Also called the Outer Ocean and the Encircling Sea.

Elanor

The yellow flower which grew on Cerin Amroth in Lõrien.

Elbereth

The Sindarin name for Varda, one of the Valar. It was she who made the stars from the light of the Trees of Aman, under which the Elves awoke.

Eldacar (1)

Fourth King of Arnor. Son of Valandil, and father of Arantar. Eldacar died in 339.

Eldacar (2)

Twenty-first King of Gondor. Son of Valacar, and father of Ornendil and Aldamir. Was originally named Vinitharya. He was born outside of Gondor, and his coming to the throne caused a civil war. He was beseiged in, and driven out of, Osgiliath by Castamir, the brother of Minalcor. Eldacar escaped to Rhovanion in 1437, and ten years later he returned to Gondor with a great army, slew Castamir, and regained the throne. Eldacar died in 1490.

Eldalië

Meaning the 'Elven-folk', it was sometimes used for Eldar.

Eldamar

Means 'Elvenhome'. It was the region of Aman were the Elves lived. The Bay of Eldamar was in this region.

Eldar

The name for the Elves, meaning 'People of the Stars'. According to Elvish legend, it was given by Oromë to all the Elves. However, it later became used only in reference to those who journeyed from Cuiviénen: the Vanyar, Noldor and Teleri.
(Note: Eldar is applied to all who left Cuiviénen; whether or not they actually left Middle-earth is irrelevant. Therefore, the Sindar of Elwë and the Green Elves are Eldar, though they are Moriquendi. However, the Avari are not Eldar.)

Eldarin

Of the Eldar. It is used to refer to the languages of the Eldar. When used in High Eldarin or High-elven, it signifies Quenya.

Eldarion

The twenty-seventh King of the Dúnedain of the Northern Line. The third of both Arnor and Gondor. Son of Aragorn II.

Elder Days

The First Age, or the Eldest Days.

Elder Kindred

A term for the Elves. Also called the Elder People and the Elder Race.

Elder King

Used in reference to Manwë.

Eledhwen

A name for Morwen, translated in The Silmarilion as 'Elfsheen', but literally meaning 'Elf-maiden' in Sindarin.

Elemmírë (1)

The name of a star.

Elemmírë (2)

A Vanya. He made the Aldudénië.

Elendë

A name for Eldamar.

Elendil

Called the Tall. He was the son of Amandil. He escaped the destruction of Númenórë with his sons Isildur and Anárion. He founded the Númenórean realm in Middle-earth, being the first King of both Arnor and Gondor. Went to Imladris with Gil-galad in 3431. Fought beside Gil-galad against Sauron in 3441, though both were killed. The name can be translated either as 'Elf-friend' or 'Star-lover'.

Elendili

Meaning 'Elf-friends', it was the name given to the Faithful.

Elendur (1)

The eldest son of Isildur, who was slain at the Gladden Fields.

Elendur (2)

Ninth King of Arnor. Son of Valandur and father of Eärendur. Elendur died in 777.

Elenna

A Quenya term for Númenórë, meaning 'Starwards'.

Elentári

Meaning 'Star-Queen', it was a name for Varda. Galadriel names her thus in her Lament.

Elenwë

The wife of Turgon, she died in crossing the Helcaraxë.

Elerrína

Meaning 'Crowned with Stars', it was a name for Taniquetil.

Elessar

The name under which Aragorn II took the Crown. It means 'Elfstone'.

Elf-friend

Title given by Elves to those of other races who had close friendships with Elves. The Houses of Bëor, Haleth and Hador were specifically called those of the Elf-friends during the First Age. In the Akallabêth, it referred to the Faithful. During the Third Age, among those called so were Frodo Baggins, and Gimli.

Elf-Havens

The Grey Havens.

Elfhelm

A Marshall commanding the éored in which Meriadoc traveled to Minas Tirith. His éored slew many of those manning the seige-engines at the walls of Minas Tirith. He commanded 3,000 men to waylay the West Road against the enemy in Anórien when the Captains of the West went to Minas Morgul.

Elfhild

The wife of Théoden. She died during the birth of her only child, Théodred.

Elfstone (1)

The meaning of the name 'Elessar'.

Elfstone (2)

The jewel created in Númenórë which became the sign of Kingship among those in Middle-earth.

Elfwine

Son of Éomer. Became the nineteenth King of the Mark. Called the Fair.

Elladan

Born in 139, the son of Elrond and Celebrían. Traveled with his twin brother Elrohir in the company of Halbarad. Fought in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

Elostirion

The tallest of the towers upon Emyn Beraid, which housed a Palantír.

Elrohir

Born in 139, the son of Elrond and Celebrían. Traveled with his twin brother Elladan in the company of Halbarad. Fought in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields.

Elrond

Son of Eärendil and Elwing. Chose to be of the race of the Elves using the choice given to his parents and their children. Was sent by Gil-galad to Eregion in 1695 SA to watch Sauron. Retreated from Eregion when it was destroyed in 1697. He married Celebrían, the daughter of Galadriel and Celeborn, in 100 TA. Dwelt at Imladris. Was the father of Elladan, Elrohir, and Arwen. Took the heirlooms of Arnor into his keeping in 1976 after the death of Arvedui. In 2933, he took in Aragorn II and his mother. Held the Council of Elrond about the fate of the Ring, which started on October 25, 3018, and ended on December 25 of the same year. He held the Ring of the Air, Vilya, throughout the Third Age. He departed from Middle-earth with the other Ring-bearers on September 29, 3019. He was called Master Elrond and Elrond Half-elven. Elrond means 'Star-dome'.

Elros

Son of Eärendil and Elwing. Chose to be of the race of Men using the choice given to his parents and their children. Was the first King of Númenor, called Tar-Minyatur. He died in 442 SA. His name means 'Star-foam'.

Elu

The Sindarin form of Elwë.

Eluchíl

Means 'Heir of Elu'. It was the name of Dior.

Eluréd

The elder son of Dior, he was slain in the attack on Doriath by the sons of Fëanor. Means 'Heir of Elu'.

Elurín

The younger son of Dior, he was slain in the attack on Doriath by the sons of Fëanor. Means 'Remembrance of Elu'.

Elvenhome

Translation of Eldamar.

Elves

Called the Quendi. The first Children of Ilúvatar to awaken. They are similar to Men, the second Children, but do not die of sickness or age. They were of four major kindreds: the Vanyar, Noldor and Teleri who left their homeland of Cuiviénen, and the Avari, who refused to leave. Those who eventually dwelt in Aman in the days of the Two Trees were called the Calaquendi (Elves of the Light), while those who did not see the Trees were called Moriquendi (Elves of the Darkness). In the beginning, they were friendly with the Dwarves, but as they years passed, they grew apart, and later warred against each other. Their power passed with the Third Age and the coming to power of Men.

Elwë

One of the leaders of the Teleri in Middle-earth. He went to Valinor with Oromë, Ingwë and Finwë to testify to the rest of the Elves about its beauty. He and his brother Olwë led the Teleri towards Valinor, but he was lost in Nan Elmoth. There he saw Melian, whom he wedded and with whom he later ruled Doriath from Menegroth. The father of Lúthien, he received the Silmaril from Beren in exchange for his daughter's hand in marriage. He had the Silmaril set in an ornamental holder later called the Nauglamir. He was later slain by Dwarves who wished to have the Nauglamir themselves. He was called Singollo and Thingol, meaning 'Greymantle' (in Quenya and Sindarin, respectively).

Elwing

Daughter of Dior and Nimloth. She escaped the sack of Menegroth. Married Eärendil. Mother of Elrond and Elros. Her name means 'Star-spray'.

Emeldir

Called the Man-hearted. She was the wife of Barahir and the mother of Beren. She led the women and children of the House of Bëor from Dorthonion after the Dagor Bragollach. She was a descendant of Bëor and her father was also named Beren.

Emyn Arnen

The range of hills south of Minas Tirith and Osgiliath east of the Anduin.

Emyn Beraid

The 'Tower Hills' in the west of Eriador.

Emyn Muil

The range of hills around the Falls of Rauros.

Enchanted Isles

The islands set by the Valar in the Great Sea to the east of Tol Eressëa which confused mariners and hid Valinor.

Encircling Mountains

The Echoriath.

Encircling Sea

The Ekkaia.

Endless Stair

That stair in Moria which led from the lowest dungeon to the highest peak (Celebdil). It was thought lost by the Dwarves after they lost Moria, but Gandalf followed the Balrog up this stair to battle it on the peak.

Endor

Means 'Middle Land'. Refers to Middle-earth.

The Enemy

A term for Sauron.

Engwar

Meaning 'The Sickly', it was one of the terms of the Elves for Men.

Entmaidens

Young female Ents.

Entmoot

The translation into Westron of the Entish word for a meeting of Ents.

Ents

Also called the Onodrim. Tree-like beings who were in existance from very ancient times. Tree-herders who came to live mainly in the Forest of Fangorn during the Third Age. Some became so like trees that they grew roots and rarely awoke. They were taught speech by the Elves, but made their own language over time. After a time, the Entwives went to the north, but the Ents stayed in the south, and the two were parted forever. Treebeard, or Fangorn, led them in battle against Isengard on March 3, 3019, and the Ents destroyed all but Orthanc. When Saruman was driven out of Orthanc, the Ents made their home in Isengard, creating a garden in memory of the Entwives, until they passed out of existence.

Entwade

The ford over the Entwash.

Entwash

The river flowing from Fangorn, cutting Rohan in two, eventually meeting the Anduin with many mouths.

Entwives

Female Ents. They dwelt long with the Ents during the early ages, but slowly wandered further north, tending their gardens, while the Ents stayed in the south tending the forests. All knowledge of their whereabouts was lost to the Ents, and there was a great hunt for them, which was put into song by the Elves. They never returned to the Ents, as is told in the song of the Ent and Entwife.

Eöl

Called the Dark Elf. He was a great smith who lived in Nan Elmoth. He made the swords Anglachel and Anguirel from meteoric iron. He would often travel to Nogrod or Belegost. He enchanted Aredhel, and wedded her. He was the father of Maeglin. He was hated by the sons of Fëanor. He followed Aredhel and Maeglin to Gondolin, where they went against his will. He was captured and brought before Turgon, whereupon he was ordered to remain or die, but he ordered his son to follow him home instead. He attempted to slay Maeglin when he refused, but Aredhel jumped in front of the dart. She died because of its poison, and Eöl was thrown from the Caragdûr to his death.

Éomer

Born in 2991, son of Éomund of Eastfold. Was taken into the house of Théoden along with Éowyn his sister. Became a Marshal of the Mark in 3017. Killed most of the Orc-band that had captured Meriadoc and Peregrin in Febuary 3019. Met Aragorn and fought in the battle of Helm's Deep, the Pelennor Fields, and the battle before Minas Morgul. Was named Théoden's heir after prince Théodred was slain in the battle at the Fords of Isen with Saruman's hosts. Became the eighteenth King of the Mark, first of the Third Line. Married Lothíriel, and fathered Elfwine. In 63 Fourth Age (1484 Shire Reckoning), he and Meriadoc rode off into Edoras together, leaving their belongings with their sons, and were never seen alive again.

Éomund

Chief Marshal of the Mark under Thengel. Married Théodwyn in 2989. Fathered Éomer and Éowyn. Killed in 3002 during a raid of Orcs on the Emyn Muil.

Eönwë

One of the mightiest of the Maiar, he was the Herald of Manwë. It was he who spoke to the Noldor before they forsook Valinor. He led the host of the Valar in their attack on Morgoth at the end of the First Age. He took the Silmarils from the Iron Crown, but they were stolen by Maglor and Maedhros.

Éored

The name used to refer to a company of Rohirrim.

Eorl

Born in 2485, was the first King of the Mark. Son of Léod, who was thrown from a horse and killed when Eorl was 16. Eorl tamed the horse that killed his father, and named it Felaróf. In 2510, wild-men from the Northeast came to Rhovanion and both beseiged Gondor. Cirion asked help of Eorl's people, who at the time dwelt near the Ered Mithrin between the Misty Mountains and Mirkwood. Eorl came, and at the Battle of the Field of Celebrant, the Eorlingas greatly aided the armies of Cirion. In return, Cirion gave Calenardhon to Eorl's people, both pledging aid to each other during times of trouble. Eorl was slain in battle with the Easterlings in 2545 and was buried in the first mound with his horse.

Eorlingas

Term used by the people of Eorl in reference to themselves.

Éothain

A Man of the mark, riding in Éomer's éored when Aragorn arrived in Rohan. He was at first not friendly with Aragorn and his company for fear of Théoden's commands about strangers in the Mark.

Éowyn

Born in 2995, daughter of Éomund. She was taken into the house of Théoden with her brother Éomer. Loved Aragorn from the moment she first saw him in her father's house. Was chosen to be Théoden's heir if neither he nor her brother returned from the war at Minas Tirith. Led the women and children to Dunharrow before the battle of Helm's Deep. Secretly rode with Théoden's company to Minas Tirith under the name of Dernhelm, bringing Meriadoc along with her. On the Pelennor Fields, she rode beside Théoden, and stood beside his body when he was slain by the Captain of the Nazgûl. She then revealed herself, and beheaded the Captain's mount. The Captain smote her such a blow that her shield was shattered and her shield-arm broken. At that moment, Meriadoc stabbed the Captain with his sword, and allowed Éowen to thrust her sword into the Captain's face, killing him. Was healed by Aragorn in the Houses of Healing, where she fell in love with Faramir, whom she later married.

Ephel Brandir

Meaning 'the encircling fence of Brandir', it the dwelling place of the Men of Brethil upon Amon Obel. It was also called the Ephel.

Ephel Dúath

Means 'Fence of Shadow'. It was the name of the mountain range between Gondor and Mordor. Also called the Mountains of Shadow.

Eradan

Second Ruling Steward of Gondor. Son of Mardil Voronwë, and father of Herion. He died in 2116.

Erchamion

Meaning 'One-handed', it was the name of Beren after his escape from Angband.

Erebor

The Lonely Mountain. Inhabited by Durin's Folk after they closed Moria in 1981 TA. In TA 1999, it was established as the royal seat of Durin's Folk when Thráin I went to permanently live there. Smaug attacked and took Erebor in 2770, and lived there until he was slain and the mountain re-taken in 2941 by Thráin II.

Erech

A hill in western Gondor where the Stone of Isildur lay.

Ered Engrin

The 'Iron Mountains'.

Ered Gorgoroth

The 'Mountains of Terror', they were north of Nan Dungortheb. Also called the Gorgoroth.

Ered Lindon

The 'Mountains of Lindon', it was another name for the Ered Luin.

Ered Lithui

The Ash(en) Mountains, this was the range forming the northern border of Mordor.

Ered Lómin

The 'Echoing Mountains', they formed the western fence Hithlum.

Ered Luin

The 'Blue Mountains', they were also called Ered Lindon. After the end of the First Age, they formed the northwestern-most mountain range of Middle-earth.

Ered Nimrais

The 'White (Horns) Mountains', this was the large range south of the Misty Mountains. It formed the southern border of Rohan and Anõrien, and the north-eastern border of Gondor.

Ered Wethrin

The 'Mountains of Shadow', they were the curving range on the western border of Dor-nu-Fauglith and formed a barrier between Hithlum and West Beleriand.

Eregion

Means 'Land of Holly'. It was the realm of the Noldor in the Second Age near the Misty Mountains. Here were made the Rings of Power. This place was destroyed in 1697. It was called Hollin by Men.

Erelas

The fourth beacon of Gondor.

Erellont

One of the three mariners who went with Eärendil on his voyage to Aman.

Erenion

The son of Fingon. He was known always by his surname Gil-galad.

Eressëa

See Tol Eressëa.

Erestor

Chief counsellor of Elrond. Took great part in the Council of Elrond. He came to Minas Tirith with the company from Imladris for the crowning and wedding of Aragorn.

Eriador

The land between the Misty Mountains in the west and the Blue Mountains in the east. In this region was the Kingdom of Arnor.

Erkenbrand

Lord of the Westfold. Fought in the Battle of Helm's Deep and defeated the Orcs. He forced the men of Dunland to rebuild the Hornburg.

Eru

Means 'The One', 'He that is Alone'. Ilúvatar. The creator of the World.

Erui

A river in Lossarnach, with its mouth in the Anduin.

Esgalduin

The river in Doriath, which divided the forests of Neldoreth and Region. It flowed into the Sirion. The name means 'River under Veil'.

Esgaroth

The town of Men on the Long Lake. Here the Men of Dale removed after Dale was destroyed by Smaug in 2770 TA.

Estë

One of the Valier, she was the spouse of Irmo. The name means 'Rest'.

Estolad

The land south of Nan Elmoth where the Houses of Bëor and Marach dwelt after they crossed into Beleriand. In The Silmarilion, it is translated as 'the Encampment'.

Ethir, the

The Mouths of the Anduin in the Bay of Belfalas. Also called the Ethir Anduin.

Ettendales

The range of mountains north of Rivendell, near the realm of Angmar, south of the Ered Mithrim.

Ettenmoors

The Troll-hills. These were north of Rivendell, south of the Ettendales, just north of the bridge over the Hoarwell on the Great East Road.

Evenstar

A title of Arwen, being Undómiel in Elvish. Was called this because she was the Evenstar of her people, being exceedingly beautiful.

Ever-eve

The term used by Galadriel in her Lament of Lõrien, referring to the night of Eldamar.

Evereven

The name for Eldamar used by Bilbo in his song about Eärendil.

Evernight

Another name for Eldamar used by Bilbo in his song about Eärendil.

Evermind

Translation of Symbelmynë. It was the white flower covering the graves of the Kings of Rohan.

Eye, the

Another name for Sauron, used more to describe his ever-searching and ever-seeing power. The Lidless Eye was a similar name, also the symbol Sauron took to signify himself. Other names include Evil Eye, Great Eye, Red Eye, and Eye of Barad-dûr.

Ezellohar

The Green Mound of the Two Trees in Valinor. Also called Corollairë.
