He came to the aid of the Rohirrim bearing Théoden and Éowyn on biers, told them Éowyn was not dead, and sent someone to the City to help the bearers before riding back off into battle. Aragorn put him in command of the City until Faramir awakened and was well. He took 3,500 men to the Morannon, one-half of the total number of men who were found ready to fight once more. He was one of those who met the Mouth of Sauron outside the Gate. At the Morannon, he stood on the hill with Éomer, and defended the front of the hill with his men. After the company left Edoras for Rivendell, he stayed behind with Faramir, Éomer and Éowyn.

He led the group of men who defended the Great West Road near the northern end of the City, which was the last group of men to retreat back into the City after the Field was taken before the Rohirrim arrived. He gave the tidings that no word was heard from them, and that the Great West Road was taken by the enemy so that they could not come.

Inland Sea

Another name for the Sea of Nûrnen.

Ioreth

A Healer, she was the oldest woman who worked in the house in which Faramir had been laid. It was she who quoted the old lore: "The hands of the king are the hands of a healer." Gandalf, standing by, heard these words, and assured her that men would long remember them, telling her there may indeed have been a king returned to Gondor. She informed Aragorn that the healers kept no athelas, or kingsfoil as they called it, because they knew of no healing powers which it had. She, however, was sent to find some by Gandalf as quickly as possible. She had lived in Imloth Melui as a child, and the athelas reminded her of the scent of the roses growing there. She was one of the first to hear that the King had returned to Gondor, and soon spread the message throughout the City.
