Náli

One of the Dwarves of Dúrin's Folk who went with Balin to reclaim Moria. He was slain, along with Frár and Lõni, in the second hall during the fighting between the Orcs and Balin's company.

Nameless

Used often in the form of Nameless One, in reference to Sauron, whom the Gondorians did not name.

Nameless Land

Used by the Gondorians, it refers to Mordor, the land of the Nameless.

Nameless Pass

The Pass of Cirith Ungol leading from Osgiliath into Mordor.

Naith (of Lórien)

The Gore, meaning that land in the shape of a spearhead between the Silverlode and Anduin. Also called the Angle.

Nan Curunir

Means "Wizard's Vale" in Sindarin, it was a term for Isengard.

Nanduhirion

A Sindarin term for Dimrill Dale.

Narchost

One of the Towers of the Teeth guarding the Morannon.

Nardol

The fifth Beacon, from the west, of Gondor.

Nargothrond

A city of the First Age.

Narrow Ice

A name for the Helcaraxë, used in Bilbo's song "Eärendil was a mariner".

Narsil

Means The Sword of Elendil. It was renamed Andúril by Aragorn after it was reforged.

Narvi

The Dwarf who made the Doors of Moria. His name is mentioned on them.

Narya the Great

The Red Ring, held by Gandalf through the Third Age.

Nazgûl

The name for those nine Men who were corrupted by the Rings Sauron gave to them. They became great leaders among men, and lived lengthy lives. However, they were corrupted by the Rings, and became wraiths under the control of Sauron. They first appeared around 2251 SA. They became Sauron's most deadly force in combatting the Ataní. Finally, in 3019 TA, they were destroyed upon the destruction of the Ring in Orodruin. Other names include the Black Riders, the Nine, Nine Riders, Nine Servants, Fell Riders, Ringwraiths, Winged Messengers, and Wraiths.

Necromancer

Used more often in The Hobbit, is it a term for Sauron.

Neekerbreekers

A name, coined by Samwise, for the creatures that inhabited the reeds of the Midgewater Marshes that squeaked "neek-breek, breek-neek" all night. They were presumed to be, by the Hobbits, "evil relatives of crickets".

Neldoreth

A forest of the First Age.

Nen Hithoel

The large area of calm water surrounding Tol Brandir in the Anduin.

Nenya

The Ring of Adamant, it was held by Galadriel. It was made of mithril, and had a gem of pure white.

New Age

Used to refer to the Fourth Age.

New Row

The name used for what was formerly called Bag End. It was called this after it was rebuilt following the death of Saruman.

Nicotiana

A plant, of which one variety was used as pipe-weed.

Night of Naught

Used in Bilbo's song "Eärendil was a mariner", it seems to refer to the area of Belegaer that was bewitched to force sailors lose their way.

Nimbrethil

Also called the Birchwoods of Nimbrethil, it was a foret of birch trees in Arvernien. According to Bilbo's song "Eärendil was a mariner", birch trees from Nimbrethil were used in the construction of the boat in which he sailed to the Undying Lands.

Nimloth

The name for the White Tree of Gondor.

Nimrodel (1)

An Elf-maiden of old, who dwelt in Lõrien and fell in love with Amroth. She stayed often by a river in Lõrien, which later was named after her. She was lost in the White Mountains, and did not come to the haven where the ship which was to carry her and her people to Valinor was waiting. She was left behind when the boat was taken out to sea by a storm off the coast.

Nimrodel (2)

The river which flows through Lõrien, named for Nimrodel. It flows from the Misty Mountains, through south-western Lõrien, to the Celebrant.

Nindalf

Also called the Wetwang, it was the land of many rivers between the Anduin and the Entwash.

the Nine

Another term for the Nazgûl.

Nine Riders

Another term for the Nazgûl.

the Nine Rings

Those Rings given to Men. The Rings forced their owners to become wraiths, thereby creating the Nazgûl.

Nine Servants

Another term for the Nazgûl.

Nine Companions

Another term for the Fellowship of the Ring.

Nine Walkers

Another term for the Fellowship of the Ring.

Niphredil

A pale flower, it grew on the slopes of Cerin Amroth.

Noakes, Old

A Hobbit who lived in Bywater.

Nob

The Hobbit servant at the Prancing Pony in Bree.

Noldor

Those Elves who went to Valinor, and who left without permission for Middle-earth after Morgoth stole the Silmarils. They were called the High Elves by those in Middle-earth, and seemed fairer to the eye than the other Elves of Middle-earth. They spoke Quenya, though usually only amongst themselves.

Noman-lands

A term referring to the uninhabitable area around the Dead Marshes and Dagorlad.

Norbury

The name for Fornost in Westron.

Nori

A Dwarf who went with Thorin II Oakenshield to reclaim Erebor. He took part in the Battle of the Five Armies.

Norland

A name appearing in Bilbo's song "Eärendil was a mariner", it appears to be a river of grey water near the World's End.

North Downs

The range of hills north of Chetwood.

Northerland

Eriador, named thus by Boromir in the telling of his journey to Imladris.

Northern Fences

The northern outposts of Lórien from which its inhabitants guarded the realm.

Northfarthing

The northern section of the Shire, its borders were between the road to Oatbarton at the East, The Water at the West, and Overhill to the South, going North until the northern border of the Shire.

North Kingdom

A term for Eriador.

Númenor

Spelled as its most revered Númenórë, it was the land give to the Ataní to live on during the Second Age. It was destroyed in the year 3319 SA when its final King set foot on the Undying Lands.

Númenóreans

Those Ataní who were taken by the Valar to live on an island in the Great Sea after the First Age. They were descended from Elros, and were given long lifespans. Through the years, however, they became envious of those in Valinor, and their lives grew shorter. Finally, upon Ar-Pharazôn's march on Valinor, the land of Númenórë was destroyed, but the Númenóreans lived on in Middle-earth through Elendil and his children.

Nûrnen

A name for the Inland Sea. It was a large lake within Mordor.
